TRIBAL MEDICINE BATAK CONTAINER
Vintage medicine container made by the Toba Batak people in Sumatra. It has superb details on the figurine and the central column. The stopper has a figure carved with a bird on his head and riding atop an animal. They watch over the content: the magical concoctions of the shaman.
The central column is made of cow bone and the base along with the carved stopper are made from wood. The body of the piece is carved with the Toba Batak calendar and magic images.
It’s unclear of the age of the item and I can’t guarantee Origins but a lot of work has gone into the carving and etching of this item…… no easy task!
