Tribal Coffee Table
Maybe one of the most impressive, oddest, most unique African tribal items I have seen and it’s a coffee table….. The table is actually bought for my private collection however I couldn’t actually fit it into my collection room.
Heavily decorated in Cowrie shells and I believe the wood is a hard wood possibly African rosewood.
Each leg is unique and these I believe are Namji dolls which are fertility dolls for newly married women, however this is the only example I have found made into furniture. The cowrie shell is a symbol of wealth in Africa. “In African legend, a love of cowrie shells shows that you could be family to an ocean spirit of wealth and earth. It also represents the Goddess of protection in the ocean.”
It has had some TLC after coming to me with missing/ damaged shells and each of the legs needed to be re-attached due to being loose, however it is now very strong and extremely heavy.
Dimensions are:
Height to table top: 40cm
Height to top of doll: 62cm
Diameter of table top: 90cm
Diameter doll to doll: 106cm
Delivery/ postage is possible via courier but please get in contact so we can get a quote. Of course collection would be preferred.
Please do not purchase on the website until contacting about delivery options because the website will charge a wrong price automatically.
